In this magnificent companion volume, Eric Quayle describes children's books from the late 16th century to the present day. He illustrates it from his extensive collection of these ephemeral and often elusive works, reproducing the hand-coloured frontispiece, the woodcuts or copper-plate engravings that helped our great-great-grandparents spell out stories like 'Cinderella' or 'The Butterfly's Ball'. Many of the books he discusses were brought quite cheaply, though some of the rare first editions were costly acquisitions. But the collector today still has many opportunities to explore new by-ways, and, with the help of this book, he will be able to buy with confidence in his specialist knowledge.
